Caretaker Role – Job Description

Caring for the Lodge House, Campground, Members/Guests and Properties at the Beaver Lodge in Union, Maine

Position available April 1st 2012 to October 31st 2012

Skills Desired

  • Independent, self-reliable who is kind yet assertive enough to be in charge
  • Ability to work independently and in groups
  • Keeps cottage clean and beautiful, treating it as their own
  • Has good communication and social skills
  • Answers phone, returns or forwards phone messages as well as check missed calls and return them promptly
  • Mechanical skills a plus (must be handy if something needs to be fixed or repaired)
  • Have a love of the outdoors, wilderness, nature and the environment
  • Eco-conscious, eco-minded , environmentally friendly and aware
  • Non drug user, no alcohol consumption while on duty
  • Must be a licensed driver and have own vehicle
  • Knowledge of first aid, updated CPR certified a plus
  • Able to lift 50 lbs

Duties

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Staff & Board of Directors, the caretaker is responsible for all of Knox County Fish and Game property.  The caretaker will see that no damage is done to the property and that all rules and safety considerations are being carried out as well as other related tasks.

Cleaning Lodge

  1. Keep floors of lodge clean.
  2. Keep kitchen clean and orderly.
  3. The caretaker will clean and refurbish the restrooms and shower periodically throughout the day.
  4. Check lights periodically throughout the day and turn off if not needed.
  5. Change out recycling bags when full or if odor is intolerable.
  6. Wipe door knobs and light switches as needed.

Maintenance of Property

  1. The caretaker will cut all grass and weed whacking.  Main areas are around the lodge, the field coming to the lodge, the cottage area, horse shoe pit, the field down back beach area etc., at least every week or sooner if needed.
  2. Weeding and raking of horseshoe pit as needed.
  3. All trash must be put in outside dumpster.  Also make sure dumpster lids are closed.
  4. Do boat checks according to Lake Association rules.
  5. maintain painting of various items when needed.
  6. All buildings will be checked daily for cleanliness and necessary repairs.

Maintenance of Beach

  1. Pick up beach on daily basis.
  2. Empty garbage on daily basis.
  3. Rake beach and fill in any holes on daily basis.

Business

  1. Answering the phone, taking messages or passing detailed information regarding lodge rental, camping, gun range, archery and memberships.
  2. The caretaker should be present during busy times of the day and busy days of the week to assist members with camping, using the beach and lodge rentals.  May leave grounds as needed, but adult coverage must be available (must be approved by President and coverage must be a current member of Knox County Fish & Game).
  3. Must be available for schedule maintenance appointments and contractors when other chair members/directors are not available.  You will need to let them in and supervise during work being done.
  4. After rental of lodge, will do walk through for cleanliness and damage and will report back to rental chairperson any concerns.
  5. Collecting money from daily camp site rentals, ice sales, memberships and returning of bottles from events.  Documenting transactions in receipt book and filling out any necessary forms that are needed.  Turning over money and paperwork to appropriate person on a weekly or monthly basis per request.
  6. The caretaker is to check all vehicles coming in to see that they are current members and to collect any fees.
  7. Assisting and providing information to any Executive Staff, Board of Directors or chairperson upon requested for running Knox County Fish and Game business.
  8. Must attend regularly monthly director and member meetings.

Personal Issues

  1. Be extremely courteous and helpful to members, guests and potential members, including phone use.
  2. Must enforce and abide by our Lodge rules.
  3. Wear logo shirt (3 will be provided)

Benefits

  1. Live in caretaker’s cottage, which is located at the main entrance.  The cottage has a bathroom, a bedroom, kitchen, closet and window facing front yard of lodge.  The cottage has a telephone, basic furnishings, is clean and well maintained.
  2. Will have access to all events and happenings at the Lodge and campground.
  3. Free utilities to include:  phone with unlimited long distance, electricity, heat, cable and supplies to include paper towels, tissue paper and soap.
  4. Free membership to enjoy the campground, beach, gun range, archery etc.
  5. Receive a monthly compensation with season full-time position.
  6. May select two weekdays off during the week.  A monthly day off work calendar schedule will be set up with the president/board of directors to provide coverage for chosen weekdays off.

Pets

  1. Pets are allowed, but there is a fee of $50.00/season for one or more dogs.
  2. Dogs must be kept on a leash in control by the owner or in an appropriate pen/kennel at all times.  The caretaker porch is NOT to be used as dog pen/kennel.
  3. Dogs on leash should never be left alone outside.

Due to some members or guests being scared of dogs we ask that caretaker dog(s) be kept inside the cottage house or on a leash away from the entrance to the cottage porch and door to allow for easier access and communication with the caretaker.

Newsletter – January 2012

Just want to say that we all hope that each and everyone had a nice Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Our meetings are the same as always, the first Wednesday of every month is directors and the third Thursday is the regular meeting with a supper from April through October.  So mark your calendars in advance so you won’t forget to join us.  FOOD IS ALWAYS GREAT!

Our annual FISHING DERBY is set for February 19, 2012.  Prizes and donations are needed; also please buy your tickets to help out.  We will be having the kitchen open with hamburgers, hot dogs, coffee, tea, soda and sweets for sale.

The annual family day will be great this year; it is July 21, 2012 and starts off at 7 a.m. with a $5.00 per person breakfast, then free lunch and games for the young ones.  We are hoping to have a lot more than usual this year for entertainment so mark your calendar with a save this date, all donations are more than welcome.

Our Winter meetings are held upstairs at the Credit Union on the Rockland, Thomaston line, no suppers during the Winter months.  Sorry!

Just a huge reminder to anyone using the range.  You MUST be a member and follow the rules or you will be removed.

We are looking for a caretaker for the 2012 Season.  Interested parties please see our post about qualifications and send a resume to KCF&G, PO Box 414, Union, Maine 04862 on or before February 7, 2012.

Newsletter – November 2011

Just want to say Happy Holiday’s to each and every one of our members and families.

The next meeting is November 17, 2011 at Midcoast Federal Credit Union ( where all Winter meetings are held.) on the Thomaston/Rockland line, at 6:30 up stairs NO MEAL Is served in the winter months

Our annual Halloween party was a great success! We are sorry that someone/or more saw fit to take/borrow/remove 20 of the pumpkins that were for the children attending.

Newsletter – October 2011

Well, Mother Nature sure fools with us huh? What a beautiful weekend!!

Just a reminder to all campers: If you want your site next year you must pay $100 before October 31st, 2011. On the flip side if you want winter storage, you must pay $100 before November 31st, 2011 or have it removed. All camp money for dues and seasonal rentals are due by May 1st, 2012.

It is $450.00 for rental of lodge on weekends, $200 for a week day. And there are no utensils provided with the rental, tables and chairs only.

There is a $25.00 fee per dog and no more than 4 per site. And it’s $700.00 a site per season.

Thursday, October 20th, 2011 there will be a boiled dinner at the lodge so come and join us. Dinner is served around 6:30pm followed by a meeting. We hope to see you there! This will be the last one for the season. Again: winter meetings will be just that and held at the Credit Union on Rt. 1 in Thomaston, upstairs at 6:30pm on the first Wednesday of every month (directors) and the third Thursday (regular) of every month. December is the only month that there are NO meetings held.

Don’t forget: if you are a hat buff and would like one with our logo on it please contact either Bernie or Janice Cox.

October 22nd, will be a Halloween dance at the lodge at 8:30 pm.
The lodge ghost and goblins will be up at the lodge on October 23rd, 2011 from 1pm till 3pm for a great party for the kids. Bring yours and join us and please bring a treat to share.

Newsletter – September 2011

Well, as sad as it seems the season is drawing to a close. Today is a fine example of a nice windy fall day. Kites anyone?

Thursday September 15, 2011 there will be a pot luck supper at the lodge, come bring your favorite dish to share and join us. At 6:30 for grub and approximately 7:00 or so for the meeting, hope to see you all there.

Sunday Breakfast Rescheduled

Due to Hurricane Irene that threatened us over this past weekend we decided to cancel our Sunday breakfast. However, we have rescheduled for this coming Sunday, September 4th. It is still all you can eat for $5.00 (NO sharing). Hoping for a good turnout! Hope to see you there!

Newsletter – August 2011

It’s been a very exciting year for the lodge. It has been a full house with beautiful flowers a GREAT new sign at the top of the road. Please come up and see it!

Our Family day was a great success again this year! Thank you to all who came.Thank you also for the generous donation of the two bicycles that were raffled off and won by Scott Warrington and Keegan Simms.

Sunday August 28th 2011 we will be doing a breakfast at $5.00 a person all you can eat – NO SHARING.

From 8.m. to 10 a.m. come on over /up/ down or whatever and join us for the feast.

Please remember you have to be a member to use the beach or range and that we do now have an archery site, so come on up and join us.

NO SMOKING ON THE BEACH or LODGE area.

Please do not park in front of the porta pottys or in handicap spaces.

The meal this month is pot luck so whip up a dish and join us at 6:30 on August 18, and a meeting to follow.

A huge thank you to all who have helped in bringing this organization back together.

Best of luck to all our little and big ones going to go back to school.

Hope you are all having a good summer with still some nice weather to go, come up and join us for a meal and a meeting. The third Thursday of each month for a small fee of $5.00

Newsletter – July 2011

Hope everyone is having a great summer (as we have finally got one)!

Just a reminder that you must be a member to use the beach, range or the archery.

The regular meeting will be July 21, 2011 starting at 6.30 for spaghetti, salad, bread and deserts for $5.00 each with the regular monthly meeting to follow. COME and JOIN US.

COME ONE COME ALL and join us for Family fun day July 23, 2011 starting with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. for all you can eat for $5.00 (NO SHARING).A fun filled day of games and prizes for the kids, free hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch. A donation jar will be out. Also you can buy raffle tickets to win a bike. We will have 2, 1 for boy and 1 for girl.

Range News – the Association has a new caretaker(s) and they will be showing up at the range when they hear gunfire to make sure everyone there has a membership or guests are escorted by a current member. So be prepared to show your membership card, they will also have a current membership list to double check your status. Also the shooting of cinder blocks from the top of the 25 yd. line will cease, in essence you are shooting a rock and your bullets are deflecting off into the air and creating a hazard!! You risk loss of your range privileges if caught doing so.

Archery is open and would love to have you come and check us out.

We are going to have hats with the lodge logo on them, be sure to get yours before they are gone.

A huge thank you to Bernie and Fishers and our ever faithful Larry for the beautiful sign at the entrance to the lodge. It’s beautiful, Come and check it out.

We still have a few daily sites open for $20.00 a night, grab them while they last.

The ladies get a big thank you for all the beautiful flowers they have done. The grounds look great!

Our man Larry and his crew of followers are hard at work keeping the roads looking great and doing the carpentering.

And our great cooks, oh yes food is always good, come and taste for your self.

Please remember if your little one dig holes in the sand to smooth them back out ,/fill them in for safety reasons

We are very sorry to announce that Ivan Rawley, will not be able to do the caretaker job due to illness, thank you for trying Ivan.

Swimming lessons will again be held for Union residents and Lodge members.

This year’s scholarship was awarded to Jesse Mathews of Lincolnville and Alician Kenze of Hope; both are going into the warden service.

The regular meeting for June is the 16th at 6.30, its pot luck bring your favorite dish to share, and enjoy the meeting after.

Range is looking great.

June is Father’s Day month any new member will get the dues rate for $50.00 June only

At this time we have a committee working on the by-laws to update them, and also a committee going over the constitution.

PLEASE remember when using the beach NO DOGS on beach or grass area and No smoking either ,most of all clean up after yourself and your children, fill in the holes and clean up your garbage, do not put diapers in the porta potty’s put them in the trash can or take them home.

MOST OF ALL – YOU have to be a member to use the beach, each member is allowed four guests but is responsible for them.

The boat ramp is public, DO NOT Park in the handicap spaces unless you have a permit to do so, no swimming in that area.

If you are taking your dog for a walk and he/she does its business CLEAN IT UP.

If it’s beneath your dignity to stop and scoop, then in reality you shouldn’t have a pooch.
